Kya is as wild and free as all her critters in the marsh lands. This both attracts people to her as well as sets her aside as a curiosity in her small town. Small town leads to some small minds and Kya faces not only abandonment but rejection.
"Oh when shall I see the dusky Lake,
And the white canoe of my dear?"
Through her life Kya is drawn to her surroundings and embraces her loneliness. Though human nature steps in and draws her out to make some connections with some of the people around.
"She laughed for his sake, something she'd never done. Giving away another piece of herself just to have someone else."
Kya learns harsh lessons from the nature around her and learns how to apply these findings to her own life. Going back and forth in timeline we learn how isolation and select words of wisdom ingrain themselves in how Kya reacts to the world around her.
"Unworthy boys make a lot of noise."
